Hillary made 18 million cracks in the presidential glass ceiling but lost as more cracks were made on the presidential black ceiling.
Obama didn’t give Hillary a chance to crack open at least the vice-presidential glass ceiling but McCain was gracious enough to do so, hoping that a large chunk of the 18 million Hillary voters would rather vote for a party that has a woman on the ticket, no matter its ideology.
What would have happened if Obama wasn’t the first to choose the Vice Presidential nominee? McCain would certainly not have picked Sarah Palin if Obama had picked Hillary. What would McCain say if asked whether Sarah would still be his choice if Obama chose Hillary? He would probably say with as much straight face as he can muster “I picked the best person for the job and that is Sarah Palin”. Right.
Republicans seem to have a knack for picking lousy VP candidates — and this is the first major decision they make after they become the presumptive presidential nominee.
George Bush Sr: Dan Quayle (of potatoe fame)
George Bush: Dick Cheney (disaster)
McCain: Sarah Palin (experience: 2 years governing Alaska)
After criticizing Obama’s lack of expertise in foreign policy, McCain — who likes to say “I am older than dirt and have more scars than Frankenstein” — has picked a 44 year old to be a heartbeat away from Presidency. See my previous blog entry titled One term President: McCain says “If I said I was running for eight years, I’m not sure that would be a vote-getter”. Does he expect Sarah to get foreign policy expertise in 4 years just by attending state funerals abroad?!
On the bright side, come November a major ceiling will be broken and that is good news.
